For power users, the unofficial single-clean install method is: 1. Install and choose to skip the key entry initially 2. Boot to Windows 3. This along with the next command makes the OS think you've done the "double install approach". Reboot the PC. If for some reason the above doesn't work, then you can also go back and do the "double install approach" but hopefully that saves somebody some time.
This is really only an upgrade if your computer currently runs Windows Vista. You can legally use this to bring a system running an older version of Windows up to Windows 7, but it will replace your old operating system, not upgrade it.
It's prudent to back up your computer in either case, but it's absolutely necessary to do so if you're installing Windows 7 on a computer running Windows XP or something older. Understand also that while Windows 7 makes more efficient use of resources than Windows Vista does, it still needs far more than Windows XP does.
If you're thinking that Windows 7 is going to breathe new life into your Pentium D - or even an early Pentium dual core - with 1GB of memory, think again.
